Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these medications need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
